CARBONDALE, Ill. — The NCAA’s new 5-for-5 eligibility rule will have a major impact on future Saluki Football rosters, with 14 current players gaining an extra year of eligibility.
Under the new rules, players now have a five-year window to play as many games as they’re able.
The practice of “redshirting” has gone away. For incoming freshman this fall, it makes no difference whether a player participates in every game or no games. It counts as one year of eligibility.
Returning college players have also been handed a five-year playing window, or they can opt to continue under the previous system in situations where additional eligibility was already granted.
Here’s a look at which SIU players are affected by the new rules.
