"I think that it starts with the coaches that you hire and the people that you let then affect everybody. If you have 105 players, you've got to trust those other men. Everybody has their own position. They're the head coach of that position. You got to equip and empower them.

Obviously, you set the standard, but while you're interviewing them, you've got to be able to know, is this guy going to be a fit? Is this what I'm looking for as a person to be here every day? We're around each other so much, and they're out recruiting, setting the standard of the type of young men that we want to bring into the program.

It's really about the players. It's about them fulfilling their goals, their dreams, you pushing them, guiding them the way.

I'm not perfect. No one's perfect. The players aren't going to be perfect, but having the attitude of wanting to grow and better themselves, I think is important. And when you surround yourselves and when you try to get a group of guys in that locker room and up here in the coach's offices that have that type of character and mentality, number one, it's so much more enjoyable.

And then I believe that you can put together a team that can go through an entire year, a season of ups and downs and come out victorious.

Ultimately, you can't accomplish anything unless there's a trust, and there's a relationship that's there. You can get so much out of somebody by telling them what to do, and there's no relationship that's not going to go above and beyond that. You've got to get to know the players. You've got to know what makes them tick. You've got to know what's important to them.

Life is tough. There's so much going on in these young men's lives, coaches' lives, that affect them on the day-to-day. And when you can get to the heart and you can get to know them, those are the people you want to be around.

You've got to be genuine. It can't be fake. It can't be just a meeting or two where it sounds good. I mean, it's just how you've got to come to work every single day. You can't try to make that happen, you've just genuinely got to care about people.

And hopefully the players respect that."
