Unscripted with Nick Hill (Part 4)

CARBONDALE, Ill. — In Part 4 of our video series with Saluki Football head coach Nick Hill, he explains his "Why" when it comes to coaching.

Part 4 Video Transcript

"Everybody talks a lot about, 'what's your why?' and we probably ultimately all coach because we had a great experience with playing. Not all coaches had played, but if they didn't play, they searched out like, man, I want to be a part of this game.

I love the game. So we've all had a love for the game as a young person. And then it's like, man, I don't want to get away from it. Then the next step is like, well, I'm going to be a part of the game. I've got a coach. My playing career is over. I can't play anymore. So I'm going to coach.

So we love the X's and O's. The part of the game that makes it fun. The competition. The highs and the lows. And you learn to deal with those lows to know that those are going to get you better. Those are tough, but everybody loves that small time of seeing things come together and winning.

Everything about competition. We've all fell in love with this game of football. And that still brings me a lot of joy.

When you're the head coach of a program, there is a CEO part of it. That maybe not all the time is the most exciting part. But you know it has to be done at a high level to be able to get the results that you want. But I enjoy that part, too.

Team building. Thinking about how it all comes together. Recruiting. Every year trying to piece together the best team that you possibly can. There's an exciting part of that as well.

I truly enjoy being able to get a group together. The things that we do in the offseason of relationship-building and seeing guys' relationships grow.

Just hearing guys open up. When you can take a step back and you're not hands-on and you can watch guys that you brought here from all over the country truly enjoying themselves, that's rewarding.

And then professionally, I love coaching the guys. Obviously we talked about that some last year. About getting back into the meeting rooms every day. Watching every rep with the quarterbacks. Still getting that itch like you can't play anymore. I'll be 41 and there's no more of me going out there and taking snaps."
